Then and Now
A hole in the wall, limited seating, a family to raise, a passion for cooking, and deep-rooted family traditions were the ingredients for the grand opening of Sayakomarn’s Restaurant on January 2, 2007. These are not uncommon origins for new restaurants, and like many, our opening was met with the initial “rush” for what this new place had to offer, followed by the usual lull when that “new smell” wore off. Sayakomarn’s means more to us than just the food. It is our name and our family. In that spirit, we sought to treat our customers as family, with a vested interest in their lives. Before long, first-time customers became repeat patrons hungry to enjoy a meal and laugh with us while sharing the details of their days, goals, and struggles. In those first days we became known as Soccer Moms, Thai on the Square, Sock it to Me, Sock a Moron, and many other iterations along the way.
Through the love and support of our community, we made a big leap and purchased the land right next to our original location to make room for our growing business. Full of pride and excitement with the success, this expansion also came with a heavy heart. To build our new location, we would have to cover up a piece of Canyon history; a mural of the Ten Commandments which was painted on the very same wall we were adding to. Many remember it but for those who do not, you can still find a photograph of it hanging in our restaurant since debuting our first remodel/expansion on March 14, 2015. On the heels of a wonderful re-opening, Canyon, TX began the steps towards allowing alcohol sales in town. So plans began for a full bar remodel, but we quickly knew that our full vision would not be completed in time and we knew we needed to offer our community a well-deserved beverage as soon as the city said “Go!”. In only 8 short months after re-opening, we added a small serving of adult beverages to our take-out counter in November 2015 only to turn around and see our 2nd expansion completed on May 19, 2016!
Our customer has grown, and our community has continued to welcome new restaurants to the town square just as warmly as we were welcomed. Our kids have grown up in our restaurant, as have we. Our employees and customers have endlessly supported us in the best of times and in the hardest of times. As we now enjoy our most recent remodel, completed on November 7, 2020, we cannot help but look back on all of the memories, support, laughter, and lots of food! We look forward to bringing our town more of the same for years to come. Because our “About Us” is about just that, about Canyon, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
